Unidentified Past Monsters Mathew has Battled!

We were continuing to explore the wrecked and abandoned mansion we found in an earlier adventure. Upon entering the library, we encountered a strange creature perched amongst the books. Mathew made a grab for it and it turned out to be an automaton rather than a flesh and blood creature. Following several cables we discovered behind the moldering tomes, we found a secret door concealed by a book shelf. As we wound our way through a maze of dark corridors, we stumbled upon this autonomous metal man. He attacked with bolts of blue energy and tried to destroy us. Our attacks bounced off of his metal plating and even the glass of his helmet seemed impenetrable. Mathew broke several toes with an ill-considered kick to the device's groin. After that, the creature grabbed Mathew and shocked him repeatedly until he smelt of sizzling bacon. I used my psionic powers to protect my tubby charge and he managed to wriggle free. Then he led the automaton on a merry, limping chase through the ruined mansion. We eventually won through to a half-filled indoor swimming pool we had passed in our earlier explorations and Mathew tried to push the creature in. Unfortunately, my clumsy Valhalladrim tumbled in with the metal-man and was violently electrocuted. I managed to insulate him against the bulk of the shock so that he survived, although he was more than a bit singed. Once dead, the mechanism was too heavy for Mathew to heave from the depths of the pool, so we are none the wiser as to who built it our why.
